At Iegorov Marine Inspection & Audits, we specialize in pre-purchase inspections, superintendent inspections, condition surveys, and vessel audits. Recently, we conducted a comprehensive condition survey on a 142 m Ro‑Ro cargo vessel — a modern ferry operating in the Irish Sea between Ireland and the UK.
This inspection took place during an early stage of dry docking, which provided ideal access to hull, machinery, cargo spaces, and outfitting. Below, we share key findings, operational lessons, and why such surveys are critical for shipowners, managers, and investors.
Purpose of the Condition Survey
The primary goal of this survey was to assess the vessel’s technical condition, maintenance status, and compliance with regulations, while identifying any visible defects, pending repairs, or operational risks.
We covered all major areas:
- Hull and underwater body
- Machinery spaces
- Cargo decks and ramps
- Accommodation and bridge
- Mooring equipment
- Ballast tanks and enclosed spaces
Key Observations
- Hull & Propulsion
The hull structure was generally sound, with only localised deformations and minor dents noted in the transom areas and side shell. These were already under repair in dry dock. Some cavitation and erosion were found on stern tube brackets, scheduled for repair.
- Rudders and CP propellers: No cracks or deformation found; zinc anodes needed renewal.
- Antifouling & topside coating: Generally in good condition, with local touch-ups in progress.
✅ Takeaway: Periodic docking inspections are essential to catch early-stage erosion before it affects propulsion efficiency and safety.
- Machinery Spaces
The vessel was fitted with twin MAN main engines (2 × 8000 kW) driving controllable pitch propellers, supported by Mitsubishi auxiliaries and a well-maintained Wärtsilä bow thruster system.
While the equipment was largely in good order, we noted:
- Overall cleanliness was impacted by ongoing overhaul work.
- Maintenance records existed, but running-hour tracking could be improved to link overhaul history with manufacturer recommendations.
- One auxiliary engine was due for major overhaul.
- A minor leakage in the ballast water treatment system was pending repair.
✅ Takeaway: Even with a solid Planned Maintenance System (PMS), synchronized record-keeping is crucial for resale value and class compliance.
- Cargo Areas
- Ramps & access systems: Structurally sound; non-slip coatings being renewed.
- Ventilation and firefighting systems: All in order and regularly tested.
- Reefer capacity & lashing arrangements: Flexible and suited for mixed cargo, though general cleaning of ceilings and frames was recommended.
✅ Takeaway: Cleanliness of cargo spaces is not just aesthetics — it supports cargo integrity, safety, and PSC inspections.
- Mooring & Deck Equipment
Both forward and aft mooring decks were well laid out, with winches and rollers properly greased. Spot coating maintenance was required in fairlead areas. Brake linings on winches remained within limits.
✅ Takeaway: Localized coating repairs on exposed mooring gear can significantly extend steel lifespan.
- Accommodation & Bridge
Bridge equipment was modern and fully operational, supported by reliable navigation and communication systems. Accommodation areas were clean and functional, with crew and driver facilities in good order.
✅ Takeaway: For charterers and buyers, well-maintained living and working spaces reflect crew care and operational discipline.
Overall Condition Rating
Across all inspected sectors, the vessel averaged a 7.5/10 rating, reflecting good general condition with manageable defects, many already under repair during the docking period.
Why This Matters for Owners & Buyers
A well-executed condition survey:
- Identifies repair priorities before they escalate into costly class issues.
- Supports negotiation in pre-purchase scenarios.
- Ensures regulatory compliance for trading areas and future port calls.
- Protects asset value over the vessel’s lifecycle.
At Iegorov Marine Inspection & Audits, our impartial and detail-oriented reports help owners, managers, and investors make informed, cost-effective decisions.
